# Competitor analysis — refresh delta (2026-08-24)

**This is a delta on the 2026-06-10 analysis, not a replacement.** The June deliverables
(`competitors.json`, `competitors.html`, `differentiation.md`, `board-deck.html`) remain the
canonical, richer artifacts — 6 competitors (DecoratorsBest, Mahones, Burke Decor, Wallpaper
Direct, Graham & Brown, Hygge & West) with deep privacy/trade/ad-tracker audits and 8 ranked
differentiation vectors. Snapshotted to git (`9fb9fc2`) before this refresh.

**Method today:** free web stack (WebFetch + WebSearch), no paid Exa. 3/5 pages crawled
directly (Milton & King, York, Hygge & West); 2/5 recovered via search fallback because
Burke Decor refused the connection (ECONNREFUSED) and Wallpaper Direct bot-blocked WebFetch
(HTTP 403). **Search-snippet facts are lower-confidence than June's direct crawl — flagged
below as "confirm before quoting."**

## A. Stale facts in the June doc that now UNDERSTATE DW's moat (correct these)

1. **Vector 2 names "wallco.ai" as the AI-original engine — that brand RETIRED.**
The live AI-generated-original storefront is now **Wallpaper's Back (wallpapersback.com)**,
   a Kamatera pm2 service (`wallpapersback` :9835) with an on-demand generation pipeline +
settlement publish gate. The vector's thesis (infinite exclusive, un-buyable catalog) is
unchanged and if anything stronger; only the brand name needs updating everywhere it says
   "wallco.ai".

2. **Vector 3 says "~53 niche microsites" — the fleet is now ~200 subdomains.**
   Per-vendor + per-material + per-decade microsites, plus the `all.designerwallcoverings.com`
aggregator. The distribution moat is ~4× larger than the June doc claims. Keep the vector,
   bump the number.

3. **NEW data-moat sub-point for Vector 3 (or a 9th vector): per-vendor GA4 attribution.**
As of this session, an event-scoped `vendor` custom dimension is live on GA4 property
551081041 and the measurement ID is injected fleet-wide, so DW can measure per-line demand
across ~200 sites in one analytics property. No single-domain competitor has a comparable
   cross-fleet, per-vendor demand signal — it's a data flywheel feeding merchandising +
which-line-to-expand decisions. Structurally hard to copy without first owning the fleet.

4. **apartmentwallpaper.com (consumer peel & stick, ~1,482 removable SKUs)** is now a distinct
apex storefront — reinforces the "DW spans three lanes (trade / consumer P&S / AI-original)"
thesis that underpins the whole strategy.

## B. Pricing/spec drift my re-crawl surfaced — CONFIRM before putting in any comparison

| Competitor | June 10 (direct crawl) | Aug 24 (search snippet — verify) |
|---|---|---|
| Wallpaper Direct — free samples | first **5** free, then ~$1.35 | first **3** free, then $1.35 |
| Wallpaper Direct — design count | 18,000+ | 12,000+ |
| Wallpaper Direct — free-ship threshold | $100 (duty-prepaid) | $150 (duty-paid); $16 under |
| Burke Decor — sample cost | no free swatch; tile samples ~$35 | $15.00 each |
| Burke Decor — trade discount | ~20–25% volume tiers | 15% on regular-price |
| Burke Decor — catalog size | ~80k SKUs | 20,000+ wallpaper patterns |

These could be genuine changes since June OR search-snippet imprecision. **Re-crawl the source
pages directly (openclaw real-Chrome to beat the 403/ECONNREFUSED) before quoting any of these
competitively.** Hygge & West facts ($195–$275/roll, ~25 designer collabs, peel&stick +
pre-pasted + traditional, wallpaper calculator) held consistent June→Aug.

## C. New competitors crawled this run (not in the June panel)

- **Milton & King** — own-brand DTC luxury murals; FREE shipping on all orders; Afterpay;
non-woven bases; "Printed in America"; trade partner program (complimentary sampling gated
to trade); per-unit pricing NOT public on collection pages. Archetype = single-brand maker
(same bucket as Graham & Brown / Hygge & West).
- **York Wallcoverings** — heritage MANUFACTURER + retail + gated B2B. 23+ designer/brand
lines (A-Street Prints, Magnolia Home, Rifle Paper Co., Candice Olson, Ronald Redding,
Missoni, Antonina Vella, Aviva Stanoff, Lemieux Et Cie). Retail pricing public; wholesale
gated behind B2B login. Store locator + find-an-installer. Quietwall acoustic (contract).
Archetype = manufacturer (partial overlap with DW's contract lane, but maker-side not
reseller-side — DW resells York among 40+ others).

Neither displaces the June panel as the sharper DW-specific comparison set; they broaden the
manufacturer/DTC-maker archetype coverage.

## D. Verdict

The June strategy holds. Vectors 1–4 (designer+contract breadth, AI-original engine, niche-
microsite distribution, privacy-as-trust-wedge) remain the durable position, and two of them
are now **larger** than documented (Wallpaper's Back replacing wallco.ai; ~200 vs ~53 sites)
plus a new per-vendor GA4 data moat. Action items: (1) find-replace wallco.ai → Wallpaper's
Back in the June docs, (2) update the microsite count 53 → ~200, (3) add the GA4 per-vendor
attribution point, (4) direct-recrawl the 6 drift rows in section B before any competitive use.
