<h1 class="page-title">Five thousand years of beating metal into a sheet.</h1>
<p class="page-sub">Goldleaf wallcoverings sit at the end of a very long line. The technique behind them — hammering metal until it is light enough to drift on a breath, then laying it onto a prepared surface — has been practiced almost continuously since the Old Kingdom of Egypt.</p>

<p class="lede">Every Goldleaf pattern shipped today is the latest entry in a craft tradition older than written architecture. The materials have changed only slightly. The motions of the hand have not changed at all.</p>
<h3>Origins · 2500 BCE → 500 CE</h3>
<h2>Egypt, Greece, Byzantium</h2>
<p>The earliest gilded objects in the historical record are Egyptian — funerary masks, sarcophagi, and temple ornaments dating to the Fourth Dynasty. Egyptian goldbeaters established the basic process: pure gold pounded between layers of skin or vellum until reduced to sheets a fraction of a micron thick. From Egypt the technique moved through the eastern Mediterranean. Byzantine workshops adapted it for liturgical icons, gilding wood panels in continuous fields so that an icon's halo would catch any candle in the room.</p>
<h3>Renaissance · 1300 → 1600</h3>
<h2>Florence, Siena, the altarpieces</h2>
<p>Italian Trecento and Quattrocento workshops took gold-leaf application to its first true industrial scale. Cennino Cennini's <em>Il Libro dell'Arte</em> (c. 1390) codified the gesso, bole, and burnishing methods used to mount leaf onto wood panels — the same fundamental sequence still used today. Cathedral altarpieces from this period (Duccio's <em>Maestà</em>, Giotto's panels, Fra Angelico's frescoes) read across a darkened nave precisely because the leaf was applied not as decoration but as a light source.</p>
<h3>The grand interior · 1650 → 1900</h3>
<h2>Versailles, the Régence, Beaux-Arts</h2>
<p>Metal leaf migrated from the altar to the salon. Versailles' Hall of Mirrors used gilded boiserie, gilded plaster, and gilded bronze in concert. The Régence and Rococo years that followed extended gilding to nearly every interior surface a wealthy household could afford. By the Beaux-Arts era the technique had crossed the Atlantic — banking halls, opera houses, and the great American hotels were finished with leaf applied by European-trained craftsmen working on contract.</p>
<h3>Modern era · 1920 → 1970</h3>
<h2>Art Deco and the hospitality wall</h2>
<p>Art Deco brought metal leaf into a more graphic register. Designers like Jean Dunand laminated leaf onto lacquer panels for ocean-liner interiors and private apartments; sheets were broken intentionally, their edges left visible, the fracture lines becoming the pattern itself. This is the moment when "broken leaf" became a finish in its own right — and where the visual vocabulary of contemporary metal-leaf wallcoverings takes its cues.</p>
<h3>Today</h3>
<h2>Renaissance Metal Leaf, Phillipe Romano</h2>
<p>The line on this site continues that lineage. Each of the 74 patterns is built by a craftsman applying foil to paper, one sheet at a time, using methods directly descended from the Trecento workshops. The substrate is paper rather than wood, the format is a roll rather than a panel, and the destination is a contemporary interior rather than a cathedral nave — but the act of laying metal onto a prepared surface, by hand, in the count of a heartbeat, has not changed.</p>
<p>Color is determined by alloy: 24-karat gold for the warmest tones, silver leaf where neutrality is wanted, bronze and copper for amber, pewter and aluminum for cooler grays. Pattern is determined by the application — where the foil is left continuous, where it is broken, where it is distressed and re-laid. None of these choices is mass-produced. They are made by the same hands, on the same morning, in workshops that have practiced the craft long enough that the technique has become a kind of memory.</p>
